Sentient is a physical and online artist-run gallery and design boutique (also including jewellery, furniture, books and homewares) located in the heart of Folkestone's creative quarter. Run by artist Rebecca Mason (www.rebeccamasonart.com) who left the bright lights of London in 2016 for a more chilled existence by the Kent seaside, it showcases the work of around 40 artists and designers.
The curators at Sentient have worked hard to select the artists and makers who best represent the Sentient style, aesthetic, themes and mentality. In particular, this means a taste for the dark, questioning, eccentric, deep and edgy in art, design and living. At Sentient, we wouldn't exhibit nor offer for sale anything we wouldn't happily have in our own homes (and indeed, do own works by most of the artists and designers at home). Nothing makes it to the gallery unless we love it.
The gallery and multispace cuts across price brackets, aiming to have something for every pocket. Prices start at under £4.
Being artist-led we are also keen to ensure our artists are treated well - with lower commission than the usual gallery standard plus quick payouts when works are sold, we aim to provide a fair deal for artists too by providing a space for their work to be seen, championing and understanding their work and methodologies and ensuring they are remunerated quickly and fairly when sales are made..
Folkestone is becoming increasingly popular with artists and creative businesses. It hosted the Folkestone Triennial and Art Car Boot Fair in 2017. It is just 46 minutes from Stratford International (London) and just under 1 hour from Kings Cross by train, plus is a perfect stop off on your way to and from the channel tunnel.
Our opening times can be found on the "FIND US" page. Our webshop is open 24 hours.
